Not sure I like how this one ends...any suggestions?

historical education tells me to forget
what I know - that I should be a clean slate
so my professors can repaint me
in hues I don't recognize
images that are familiar but distorted - blurred

I thought I knew
that Columbus discovered the Americas
(the Vikings found it in 1000 CE)

the paint from elementary
from middle and high school
is still wet
if I wanted - I could smear
my fingers through it mixing
yellow (Bubonic plague)
purple (French Revolution)
red (World War II)
green (Vietnam War)
into an ugly brown (dates & names)
that will make people look away
or come at me with white paint to begin again

and again

and again

How many layers will cover me before it ends?**
