In Which Rachel Steps into the Shadows (Rachel, New Directions, PG)

Title: In Which Rachel Steps into the Shadows
Author: JadeTate
Pairing,Character(s): Rachel, New Directions
Rating: PG
Word Count: 547
Spoilers: N/A
Summary: When Nationals rolled around, Rachel didn't have a solo--and she was fine with that.

The songs they performed at Nationals were a smashing success. Sectionals had been saved with Finn's song choice, Regionals with Kurt's. No one was entirely surprised when their second place National finish was won with the songs chosen by Rachel (and arranged by Puck but he and Rachel were the only two who knew that).

The first was a solo from a musical. However, everyone had been surprised at the song choice due to the content—Rachel couldn't sing the song, no matter if she wanted to or not. It simply wouldn't make sense. Rachel didn't mind though—she'd gotten her time at Sectionals. She'd suggested “I Know Where I've Been” from Hairspray specifically so Mercedes would get her solo.

There's a dream
In the future
There's a struggle
That we have yet to win
And there's pride
In my heart
'Cause I know
Where I'm going
Yes I do !
And i know where I've been
Yeah

The second had been a duet, traditionally sung by two girls, but Schue had wanted to have Finn and Rachel sing it and while that would have been somewhat appropriate given the subject matter, Rachel had surprised everyone when she insisted it be sung by two boys to make a statement. Then she made a quiet suggestion on who the two boys should be and no one could say a word because, really? What were Puck and Finn, slowly regaining their friendship, supposed to say when she asked them to sing “For Good” from Wicked?

And just to clear the air
I ask forgiveness
For the things I've done you blame me for
But then, I guess we know
There's blame to share
And none of it seems to matter anymore

The final song chosen wasn't from a musical. It was one she personally held dear to her heart since she first heard it. She felt, and Schue had agreed, it described them all and what they'd learned in the year they'd been together. Rachel thought it appropriate that it be Quinn who sing “Play On” by Carrie Underwood.

What you're gonna do when the show is over
What you're gonna sing when the the song ends
How you're gonna cope when there is no closure
Where you're gonna reach when the goal gets higher
How you're gonna make it through
When you think you lost your chance

Play on when you're losing the game
Play on 'cause you're gonna make mistakes
It's always worth the sacrifice
Even when you think you're wrong
So play on

Even when the floodgates swing wide open
Never let the current take you down, no
Even when you're not sure where you're going
Swimming through a mess and you can't get out
Just going through the motions
Trying not to drown

Play on when you're losing the game
Play on 'cause you're gonna make mistakes
It's always worth the sacrifice
Even when you think you're wrong
So play on

Even through a storm on the darkest night
Don't you ever give up the fight
Even when you feel you're all alone

Play on, play on

Play on when you're losing the game
Play on 'cause you're gonna make mistakes
It's always worth the sacrifice
Even when you think you're wrong
So play on
